Note: Find as much of this gear as you can from used gear stores or outlets. It will save you so much money and you’ll get quality gear. I also have promo deals from American Mountain Guiding Assn so I can shop for us in bulk if we need.
Crestone Peak + Blanca Peak — Overview
- Permits: None. No climbing or camping permits needed.
- Camping: Free dispersed camping everywhere (South Colony Lakes & Lake Como) First come, first serve
- Access: Roads are rough (especially Lake Como). Park low and hike in
- Fires: Check restrictions (late August = high fire risk)
- Human Waste: Pack it out / wag bags strongly recommended
- Biggest Risk (Not permits): Afternoon lightning. Start early, be off ridges by late morning
PACK SYSTEM - find used!
- Summit pack (30–45L for summit push)
- Backpacking Pack (50–65L for overnight camp gear)
CLOTHING SYSTEM (Layers are key)
Base Layers
- 3-4 t-shirts (avoid cotton if possible)
- 3-4 durable athletic shorts (think cargo shorts not nike shorts)
- 1 Lightweight long sleeve sun shirt
- Underwear (non-cotton)
Mid Layers - find used!
- 1 lightweight fleece or hoodie
